PORTRAIT OF A DONOR: WHY I GIVE TO NILD–MEET PAUL & DONNA HOBBS


NILD is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that believes a direct, focused attack on deficient thinking skills can stimulate the brain to work more effectively.

• NILD-trained therapists go beyond tutoring and use techniques that integrate aspects of strategy development, reasoning, and oral language proficiency within the framework of learning basic skills in primary academics, such as reading, writing, and mathematics.

  Approximately 75,000 children around the world have been through NILD’s program in the past 25 years. DavidHinshaw was one of the first. He struggled with a learning disability in elementary school and says, “Two years of NILD educational therapy trained me to think critically and prepared me for success today in the global arena of communications technology sales. NILD changed my life!"

  Your tax deductible gifts will assist NILD in its efforts to reach these struggling learners and release them from the confines of their learning disabilities.

For every day without development and employment of NILD’s programs, thousands of at-risk students of all ages are failing to become independent learners and are being marginalized by society.

  GIVING TO NILD
  

  There are almost as many ways to make a donation as there are needs to be met.

  Gifts of Cash: Making a donation of cash is as simple as writing a check or authorizing a charge on your credit card.

  Gifts of Securities: Stock that has increased in value is one of the assets most frequently used for charitable giving. Stocks must have been held for a minimum of one year.

  Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets: To maximize the value of a retirement account, consider making a lifetime gift of its after-tax values to a tax-exempt deferred giving plan.

  Gifts of Real Estate: Using real estate, such as your house, farm, commercial property, or undeveloped land, to fund a gift allows you to preserve your cash assets, receive significant tax and income advantages, and make a larger charitable gift than anticipated.

  Gifts of Life Insurance: Naming NILD as your life insurance beneficiary can be a wonderful way to fulfill your desire of helping this important organization.

  Matching Gifts: Under a corporate matching gift program, gifts made by a company’s eligible employees to non-profit organizations which meet the company’s guidelines are matched with company or corporate foundation funds.

  Planned Giving: Depending on your individual circumstances, these plans can increase your income, reduce your taxes, unlock appreciated investments, relieve you of investment worries, and ultimately provide very important support.

  Volunteer Opportunities: NILD volunteers can serve in many ways. We have opportunities both for occasional volunteers and those who have time to give on a more regular basis. These range from special event opportunities to daily administrative work.

NILD HONORS TWO DEPARTED FRIENDS

At NILD's 30th Anniversary Conference in Orlando, Kathy Hopkins announced new memorial funds to honor two dear NILD friends.

 

Donna Borges 1955 - 2011

         

Donna Borges Memorial Fund
Loving wife, faithful mother of two grown sons, missionary, and mentor to many young women, Donna began working for NILD's Discovery Program as an Educational Therapist in 2007. Donna had a passion to reach at-risk children and was instrumental in the launch of Newsome Bailey Academy, a donor-funded program that provides NILD Educational Therapy for inner-city children in Newport News, VA. Donna is fondly remembered for always encouraging educators to take NILD Educational Therapist training and her Memorial Fund will be used to provide scholarships to this end. 

 

 

 Jamie Evans 1959 - 2010

Jamie Evans Memorial Fund 
Jamie was a gifted teacher, author, and preacher. He cherished, and was adored by, his wife and two teenage children. Early in his childhood, Jamie was diagnosed with a unique combination of severe learning disabilities. His developmental psychologist told Jamie that he was extraordinarily bright but would need to work twice as hard as other kids. Jamie took these words to heart and relied on determination, faith, discipline, and the help of encouraging parents and teachers to overcome his disabilities. Jamie graduated from the College of Wooster, Ohio and Princeton Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. He authored a book, An Uncommon Gift, about his journey overcoming learning disabilities, and became a regular speaker at conferences for the learning disabled, including NILD Conferences.

At the family's request, all donations to the Jamie Evans Memorial Fund will be used to provide scholarships for children who struggle with a learning disability. While supplies last, donors to this Memorial Fund will receive a free copy of Jamie's book.
